How to Clean a Wool Oushak Rug at Home
Share
Every pet owner knows the feeling. You walk into the living room and there it is β the dog looking a little too innocent, and a wet spot right in the middle of the rug you love. Deep breath. If it's a handmade wool Oushak, it can handle this.
That's the part people don't expect about these rugs: for all their quiet beauty, they're made to be lived on. Low pile, soft wool, and colors that forgive a lot of ordinary life. Whether yours is a modern Oushak rug in a soft, collected palette or a Turkish Oushak rug with more classic character, caring for it is simpler than you'd think β accidents included.
The short version: blot the spot right away, slip a towel underneath the rug, clean with Dawn Powerwash and a warm-water rinse, then blot dry β repeating until it lifts. Keep up with weekly low-suction vacuuming, and have the rug professionally hand-washed every one to three years. Because these rugs are 100% wool and handmade, they're naturally forgiving β wool resists dirt and hides everyday wear, which is exactly why an Oushak makes such a good living room rug for homes with kids, dogs, and real life.
Everyday care keeps the deep cleans rare
Most of keeping an Oushak beautiful happens between the deep cleans. Vacuum once or twice a week on a low-suction setting, and skip the rotating beater bar β it's too rough on wool and on the pile. Run the vacuum with the direction of the pile rather than against it, and keep it away from the fringe, which can tangle or break if it gets pulled in.
Every six to twelve months, rotate the rug 180 degrees. Rooms wear unevenly β a sofa here, a sunny window there β and turning the rug now and then keeps the wear, and any gentle fading, even across the whole piece.
How to clean a spot on my wool Oushak or flatweave rug
Back to that spot on the rug. Whether it's a pet accident or a knocked-over drink, an Oushak handles it well if you move quickly. This is the exact method we use on our own wool Oushaks β and the rule to remember is blot, don't rub.
- Blot the spot with a clean towel. Press down to lift as much of the liquid as you can, working from the outer edge inward. Resist the urge to rub.
- Place a towel underneath the rug. This is the key step β a folded towel under the spot catches the moisture as it rinses through, instead of letting it sink into your floor.
- Spray with Dawn Powerwash. A few sprays directly onto the spot is all it takes.
- Pour warm water over the area to rinse. This flushes the cleaner and the mess up and out of the wool.
- Blot again with a clean towel. Press a fresh, dry towel over the spot to soak up the water.
- Repeat as needed. Keep going until the spot is gone, then let the rug air-dry fully before anyone β two-legged or four β walks back over it.
What not to use on a wool rug
A few things do more harm than good. Skip bleach, ammonia, and harsh chemical cleaners β they can pull color from the natural dyes. Steer clear of steam cleaning and very hot water, too; both strip the natural oils out of the wool and can shorten the life of the rug. Warm water for a quick rinse is fine β it's boiling-hot water and harsh chemicals a wool Oushak won't thank you for.
When to call in a professional
Even with good habits, every rug benefits from a proper wash now and then. Plan on professional cleaning every one to three years, depending on how much traffic the rug sees. Look for a cleaner who specializes in handmade or Oriental rugs and hand-washes with mild soap and cold water β not a machine or steam service. It's the safest way to refresh a piece you plan to keep for a long time.
A few habits that protect your rug
A little prevention goes a long way. A breathable felt-and-rubber rug pad keeps the rug from sliding and adds cushion underfoot β just avoid PVC pads, which can stick to hardwood. Protect the rug from long hours of direct sun with a sheer curtain or UV-filtering film, and never fold an Oushak for storage, since folding leaves permanent creases. Roll it instead, pile-side in.
Size matters here, too. A rug that's too small leaves a room feeling unsettled, while the right size grounds everything. In most living rooms, a 9x12 oushak rug is the sweet spot β large enough to sit under the front legs of your sofa and chairs and pull the seating together. If you love a design but need a different footprint, we make every rug to order in your exact dimensions, so you can have it made to your size.
Frequently asked questions
Are Oushak rugs hard to clean?
Not at all. Because they're 100% wool, Oushak rugs naturally resist dirt and hide everyday wear. Regular low-suction vacuuming, quick blotting of spills, and an occasional professional wash are all it takes.
Can you steam clean an Oushak rug?
It's best not to. Steam and boiling-hot water strip the natural oils from the wool and can loosen the dyes. For spots, stick to gentle blotting, a spray of Dawn Powerwash, and a warm-water rinse, and leave deep cleaning to a professional who hand-washes.
How often should I vacuum a wool rug?
Once or twice a week on a low-suction setting, moving with the pile and keeping clear of the fringe. Skip the rotating beater bar.
Are Oushak rugs good for living rooms with kids and pets?
Yes. Their low pile, soft wool, and forgiving patterns make an Oushak a practical living room rug for busy homes β spills blot up easily and the wool wears gracefully over time.
What's the difference between a modern Oushak rug and a Turkish Oushak rug?
Both are hand-knotted from wool in the Oushak tradition. Our modern Oushak rug is made in India using a Persian style knot.Β While our Turkish Oushak is made in Turkey with Turkish wool in the Turkish traditional knot structure.Β They're cared for in exactly the same way.
Can I use Dawn Powerwash on a wool rug?
Yes β it's the spray we reach for on our own wool Oushaks. Spray it right on the spot, rinse with warm water, and blot dry with a clean towel. Work gently and blot rather than scrub, and you're good.
How do I get pet urine out of a wool Oushak rug?
Move quickly. Blot up as much as you can, slip a towel under the rug, spray the spot with Dawn Powerwash, rinse with warm water, and blot dry β repeating until the spot and any odor are gone.
How do I clean a wool flatweave rug?
The same blot-first method works. Blot spills quickly, spot-clean the area, and let the rug dry flat. Vacuum on low suction, and keep flatweaves out of standing water since they're flat-woven rather than thick and piled.
What size rug do I need for my living room?
For most living rooms, a 9x12 rug is the sweet spot β large enough to sit under the front legs of your sofa and chairs and tie the seating together. If your room needs a different footprint, we make every rug to order in your exact size.

Made to live with
Cared for simply, a handmade Oushak only gets better with time. Our hand-knotted Oushak rugs β both Modern Oushak and Turkish Oushak β come in traditional and transitional styles, with coordinating wool flatweaves if you'd like something lighter in a flatter weave, and designs made to work together from room to room.
More than anything, I want these rugs to be lived on. Spread out a blanket for movie night, let the baby learn to crawl, host the holiday dinner that gets a little messy β that's exactly what they're made for. A good wool rug is far tougher than it looks, and now that you know a spot is nothing to panic over, there's no reason to save it for a room nobody sits in. So please, don't tiptoe. Make your family's memories right here on it β and if you ever have a question, I'm only a message away.
